This Cavalry Sabre is the result of a phenomenal collaboration between Alec Steele and Will Stelter and the first art piece to leave Steele's workshop in Bozeman, Montana.
Over the course of 3 months, the pair worked to build this Civil War Era inspired Sabre. The journey was not without trials and tribulations: they had to research and learn new skills to cast the pommel and guard from brass, work with wax for the first time and learn how to set diamonds. Despite the difficulties along the way, this sword was certainly worth the effort.
The blade is forged from 15N20 high-carbon, nickel alloy steel and treated with a "French Blue", a beautiful rubbed-down cold blue finish that leaves a satin, light grey colour to the blade. Along three-quarters of the blade runs a fuller and then a false edge on the spine of the blade for the last quarter. The edge itself is sharpened from a secondary bevel, originating from the primary convex bevel.
It is a very fine-feeling weapon in the hand. At 2.16lbs and a balance point 6.5" from the guard, it feels extremely nimble, agile and powerful.
The guard is cast from brass and boasts 21 G/H/I-colour VS Diamonds, one flush set and the remaining pavé set into the endings of 3 leaves of the sculpted scrollwork. The tables of the stones shimmer light beautifully as you hold the sword in your hand. Montana mined, Yogo Sapphires give a sparkle of blue and a nod to the beautiful land the sword was built in. Idaho mined Garnets, round off the American theme through the piece.
24 Karat twisted Gold accents the paper-micarta, fluted handle, which is secured firmly in place with a bedding of epoxy and a tang peened over the pommel.
